These folks weren’t able to join us, for a variety of flimsy reasons, but they would like to extend their fondest greetings to their fellow classmates in the most impersonal way possible –

that being, of course, e-mail:

From: April Katz (‘73), Iowa

I really am sorry that I won't be able to make it to this reunion. I had a wonderful time at the last reunion and scanning the list of attendees makes me wish I would be able to attend. I'm writing from a printmaking workshop in Belgium where I have been spending part of a semester's leave. I will just be arriving home to Iowa when the reunion occurs but I wish you all a wonderful week end and yes, I do hope to be able to come to the next one.

— April

Sorry, if the weather is nice today, I'm over at the Huntington Fall Festival by Heckscher Park in Huntington. It's a HUGE event but don't expect to park anywhere close by. (They do run shuttles from the Huntington train station so you can hop on the train at Hicksville and go EAST to Huntington. Remember that's AWAY from NYC.) My organization's booth is on Madison Street. We'll be there both Saturday and Sunday. Maybe I'll see you if you stop by.

Dear Class of ‘72:

Some are born Great. Some achieve Greatness. And some have Greatness thrust upon them because they are members of the Class of ‘72.

You truly are a remarkable group in so many ways. For me, the most incredible aspect of your class is that you really like each other. (Do I sound like Sally Field?) Your spirit made you a joy to teach; your good humor and commitment to learning and each other, your kindness and social concern, are but a small part of your group accomplishments. I want you to know that whenever we, the old warhorses of the faculty, reminisce, we always smile, sigh, and say, "Ah, ‘72 — now there was a CLASS!!!

So sorry I can't be there. Looking forward to the next spectacular gathering. With great affection, wonderful memories, and best wishes for you all.

Estelle Stern Rankin

I'd love to hear from you if you get the time: Rankinfile@optonline.net.

From: Jeff Alperin (‘71), California

Unfortunately, at the 11th hour a turn of events is preventing me from making the trip from California to the reunion. I was greatly looking forward to seeing old friends. Please know I'm there in spirit and PARTY LIKE ROCK STARS!* — Jeff

* Does that mean we're supposed to choke to death on our own vomit?

From: Anne Havrilla (‘73), New Jersey

Best wishes to the class of 1973, and to the teachers who are remembering with you. I'm sorry I cannot be with you, but I'm sure that you will have a great time!

Hello fellow Jayhawks!

I am truly sorry that I can’t be there with you to reminisce and to see so many of you after 34 years! So many of you are there and it would a load of fun to see you. Big hellos to everyone especially my ’73 friends Jay Shapiro, Brett Silvers, Charles Koppelman, Beth Fischer, Wendy Keavey, Lisa Stewart, Jacqueline Schachter, Hope Weinrod, Peter Feinman, Jane Tomasello, Meryl Edelman, Sharon (Shari) Chalkin, Melanie Schiffman and Roberta Eagle). Hi also to my brother Joe’s (formerly know as Joey) ’71 friends Jimmy Sausmer and Scott Agin.

Ms. Sutcliffe. Mr. Chaglasian and Mr. Perna, you are all remembered fondly!

After graduation from JHS, I have stayed close to both coasts, living in Boston, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Now I am trying something new and live in the land of the mega high school marching band (yes, my son is in one) and the double cab pick up truck (no, I don’t own one): Boerne Texas, which is just outside the city limit of San Antonio. I met my husband, Peter, long ago when we were both in medical school and we have two boys; Ben is a junior in high school and Sam is a freshman at Harvard. I’m a radiologist and practice part time at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

I attached a family photo in case it can be posted.

Y’all (oops, I mean you guys) have a fabulous weekend! I would love to hear from you!!

HI everyone! so sorry i cannot be there to join in the reunion festivities. I was all set to come, i was even one of the first to send in my money, but sh-t happens!! My oldest son, Andrew, who is majoring in film, made a short movie for Fox Searchlight three years ago, and it is finally getting recognition- The film, a short entitled, "Senioritis", was accepted into the First Glance Film Festival in Philadelphia, and of course his showing happens to be on October 6th- so as you can imagine, I had a huge conflict, but you will all forgive me if I decided to watch my son's creation on the big screen. IF any one is interested you can log onto the firstglance Philadelphia web site and see a trailer of his film. It is showing at 8 Pm on the 6th. Hopefully my husband Rob and I will make it to the 40th if we are not at the Academy Awards(everyone keep their fingers crossed!) HAVE A GREAT TIME- my sister, Amy, will fill us in on all the gossip- love to all.

With much regret I can be removed from the "most likely be there" and moved to the "you're gonna be sad for missing it" list. The sting is deeper with coach Bryant (one of my all time favorite teachers) showing up. I look forward to all the reports of misbehavior but expect they will be tame since Stu Fishman isn't on the list. I expect Michael Lewis to up the antics in his absence. Well done on the prep.. It's going to be a great turnout.

HI. Sorry I can't be at the reunion but I'm with you in spirit. I've got a work related event I can't skip out on. I wish you all the best. Hope life's treating you great and hope to catch up at the next BASHE BASH. Benita Zahn .. '72

Unfortunately, I have to tell you that I won't be able to join you all on Oct 6 ... I have a concert that night, and the orchestra doesn't take too kindly to those who call in sick for the performance after attending all of the rehearsals. (Go figure, they're really uptight about things like that. I play in the Orchestra of St Lukes here in NYC-I'm a violist.)

For those of you who will be at the reunion, please have a drink for me!

Don't sing karaoke.

All the best,

Ann Roggen

I'm just back from a business trip and the holidays.

Unfortunately, I can't logistically make it to the reunion. I tried to work it out, but it's just way too complicated as I have a craft show that weekend in Northampton, MA. I'm disappointed, too, but will hopefully make it to a future reunion. I hope everyone has a blast!

Best,
Robin

Sorry I wont be back for the October Reunion. My Dad is turning 80 that weekend and we will all be in Tampa for a family reunion. Then my daughter and I fly up to Providence for Parent's Weekend at Brown. It would be great to see everyone and you are doing a great job on the newsletter. I really enjoy hearing from everyone.

I am sorry. I can’t be there. I was trying; but some unexpected expenses have come up. I was back east this July/August & I just can’t leave work, again, also my husband is traveling for work that weekend & I can’t leave a 14 year old. We all remember those days! I am truly bummed that I can’t be there. I want to send a big blow up doll to accompany Michael Lewis.

I hope that the next gathering will be in late July or early August when I travel back east. I am planning a Christmas/ New Years visit. Will anyone be around?

My love to the gang! Schaef the "Friendly Fish"

We missed the 30th reunion because our oldest was graduating from college. Now we're missing the 35th because it's "family weekend" for our youngest who's a freshman in college. We're starting to think this is no coincidence. We contemplated not going to family weekend but didn't want to face the guilt trip. You all know the story: She's the youngest, no baby pictures, and so on and so on. So we're hoping everyone comes back for the 40th because all 4 of our girls will be done with college! We'll have no excuses. We miss everyone and hope you have a blast!

From: Jane Altvater Duda (‘72), Florida

You, unfortunately, can count my head out. Ed has three business trips in the next few weeks, the last of which requires my attendance. I had asked, can't the President, Vice President and Director of Human Resources live without me? Apparently, the answer is no. I would be the only Director Wife not appearing, and apparently in the corproate world, this is SO UNACCEPTABLE. So off to Naples, I go.... although the Milleridge is where my heart will be. Please give my condolences to the classes of 71,72 and 73. I hope that after this announcement the reunion will still be held. Hard to beleive, but life does go on after Jane Altvater begs out.........so sorry, all. Hope you all have a great time, and as usual, pictures will be greatly appreciated.

Love ya,

Jane

Sorry, grandkids rule! We won't be able to be in town but please wish my best to all at the reunion! And congratulations to the reunion committee for doing such a wonderful job!

Thank you for the reminder. Alas, I will not be able to attend the reunion this year as I have some family obligations to take care of in October. I will read about

it on the website. Best wishes to all,

Greetings from San Jose, CA, capital of Silicon Valley (which you might have a hard time finding on google maps).

I wish I could attend the reunion and see fellow classmates from Class of ‘73, but know I’m there is spirit (whatever that means). San Jose, CA is a far cry from Jericho, New York, but I still have fond memories of High School in New York, the fine education I received, the fun times, and great friends and acquaintances. My career continues as a professor of Nutrition at San Jose State University where I’m trying to change the world one carrot at a time. If you find yourself in this beautiful area (we’re only one hour south of San Francisco) please look me up. You can also read about me at

Best,

Thanks for the invite. I will be in Europe, not be able to make this one. Maybe next time. Enjoy!

From: Mr. Raymond Matienzo (faculty), Florida

Greetings from a teacher who sincerely wishes he could have joined the celebration this coming weekend. Know that the classes of 1971, 1972, and 1973 were part of those "golden years" when we teachers counted our blessings for having decided to teach high school and, more importantly, to have chosen Jericho. You were fabulous students then and could only be fabulous adults now. I promise to make the next reunion. They may have to cart me there, and I may look like hell, but I'll be there. Love to all.

I'm sorry I won't be able to join y'all at the reunion. I will be at the parents' weekend at my daughter's high school here in Virginia. It's a big deal and I couldn't miss it. The emails and newsletter are fabulous; I look forward to continuing to read them. Have a great time. I will do my best to make it to the next one.

From: Ilene (Idonna) Resnick Kruger (‘72), California

I am sorry I will not be able to make the reunion. I am sure everyone will have a good time (not a great time, because I won't be there). These days I am too busy teaching English as a second language (New York Jewish is my first language) and occasionally doing stand-up comedy. I am divorced and tried to think of an old beau from Jericho that got away — I could not think of anyone. I did marry Jay Starr when we were five, but it did not work out. Silly me, I should have kept the house! If any available, witty Jericho men find themselves in sunny San Diego, they can look me up. I will be very well-represented at the reunion by my dear friends Beth Fischer Gemmill (the rumors about her are not true — just kidding) and Randy San Antonio. You have done an amazing job putting this together.

From: Evalyn Block Merrick (‘71), New Hampshire

Well, the party isn't at my house, at least not this weekend, though last weekend my daughter was married, and we had a beautiful party!

I'm afraid my decision to withdraw my attendance must still stand. Not sure if I mentioned I'm a New Hampshire State Legislator, and as it is getting close to the primary, there is a great deal going on up here in the North Country and I must be available. Weekends are sometimes busier than midweek. The wedding expenses also presently dictate staying close to home. Ah, but it was well worth it! In case you were wondering, NH State Representatives practically volunteer their time. If I didn't love it so much and didn't experience the joy of how one person can make such a difference, I wouldn't run for another term. Besides, my party would be pretty upset if I didn't!

A little update for the absentee bulletin board: I'm told I look better than I did in high school, but don't believe everything you hear. (Having a stem-cell transplant makes you young again if you survive it, and clearly I did!) I have been in several movies, lots of plays, am a Hospice Volunteer, and as I mentioned, a New Hampshire State Legislator. My biggest accomplishment is having raised two fabulous kids. My eldest, Rachel, just graduated from the Washington College of Law at American University with a Doctor of Jurisprudence, and was married last week to the kind of guy any parent would be proud to have as a son-in-law. My youngest, Scott, was elected to the NH State Legislature at the ripe, young age of 19, while a Sophomore at Tufts University, has been serving his term while finishing college, and is presently serving his second term. He was the first Democrat to be elected to the State House from our district in 40 years (I was the second!) and the second youngest in the State's history.

I suppose I should mention that my husband is a very successful doctor, and instead of living in a big city where he could be making the big bucks, he is a humble, country doc who won't be able to retire until he is 85. Oh, but to live up here in God's country, you would understand. We are only one hour from the Canadian border, live in the shadow of the magnificent Presidential Range, and in the Grand Bois du Nord. Come visit and see for yourself.

Wishing you all the best. Wish I could be there! Do fill in the absentees with all the delicious gossip and have fun!
